Breaking Through the Blahs
Do you feel blah?
The holiday excitement (and stress) is behind us now, the bills are showing up from excess holiday spending, and the scale is being rather unfriendly lately. For some people, New Year's Resolutions have already been broken, or willpower is wavering. The newness of the snow is long gone, and the drudgery of putting up with dark winter days is wearing on many people. This is the January blahs…
I'm definitely feeling it. I miss daylight and the feeling of grass. There's a terrible disaster in Haiti and all I can do (besides donating to dedicated charities) is watch from afar and pray for the people.
I continue with my training and blogging and trying to spread the word about raising money to build a school in Mozambique. A flu and a lingering sinus cold have brought my performance on the rowing machine to an embarrassing level of slowness. And I'm struggling with keeping my spirits up through the blahs. I know the blahs will end, and my energy will pick up again. But I need some help to snap out of this, and I know what to do.
Last week I mentioned listening to Tony Robbins at one point in time. Well, that tweaked my memory, and I recall one of his programs had an exercise that was designed to start the day off with a positive and powerful attitude. This exercise really framed my day and helped me focus on what was important. Here it is:
Each morning, ask yourself empowering questions and come up with 2 or 3 answers for each. Think and feel the answers to the questions, and you will likely find your emotional state change for the better.
Here are some sample questions that Tony used:
- What am I happy about in my life now?
What about that makes me happy? How does that make me feel? - What am I excited about in my life now?
What about that makes me excited? How does that make me feel? - What am I proud about in my life now?
What about that makes me proud? How does that make me feel? - What am I grateful about in my life now?
What about that makes me grateful? How does that make me feel? - What am I enjoying in my life right now?
What about that do I enjoy? How does that make me feel? - What am I committed to in my life right now?
What about that makes me committed? How does that make me feel? - Who do I love? Who loves me?
What about that makes me loving? How does that make me feel?
I used questions 1-4 and made up one other one – How can I make today a great day?
I posted these questions next to my bathroom mirror and went through the list in the shower. Often it took up the whole time I was in the shower (including shampoo AND conditioner)
So time to dust off the Q and A sessions, and blast through the blahs
Wanna try it too?
